"Major League Baseball understands that not everyone can be the Most Valuable Player, and we want to let these other players know that we nonetheless appreciate their effort and support their continued interest in the game of baseball," commissioner Bud Selig said. "In the spirit of Mr. Zeile, this award celebrates a player's commitment to the sport, his outstanding attendance, and the embodiment of the game's most important qualities: taking the field, giving it your all, and making new friends." It will ring true with many of you, the rest of you won't read it all... Quittin’ Time? ”Winners never quit, and quitters never win.”—Aphorism ”...But people who never win and never quit are idiots.”—Larry Kersten Kersten is right. So is the guy who said, “If it first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use makin’ a fool of yourself.” Our informal HQ polls tell us that the vast majority of Roto is played in keeper leagues. And in that context, knowing when to “quit” the race in this year is critical to success in subsequent years. ”Gamely” hanging in with a lost cause to finish fifth will often doom you to finishing fifth (or worse) in the coming seasons—not only have you played out some of your top players, but your fellow also-rans have improved by making dump deals. We’re starting from the assumption that you are not realistically looking at a possible pennant. If you are, you have to go for it. Unless you are a shark in a minnow league, even the best players cannot expect to compete for the title often. So let’s go on assuming you can’t win, but with some luck and some moves, you might make the money. If you are a “tweener”—maybe fifth or sixth, a little out of the money, but not a plodding also-ran—you have to make decisions based on three factors: Can you make the money? Is moving into a money spot worth the cost? If you are folding your tent, when is the optimum time? CAN YOU MAKE THE MONEY? To begin the process of deciding if you can move into the money, you have to project your league’s final category standings and overall standings. Then you have to look at how many points you would need to make up, how you project in the categories, how many teams stand between you and where you want to end up. Of these, the last is most important. We’ll turn to that in a minute. First, you have to assess whether you can possible make up the difference between you and where you want to finish. To do this, you need your year-end projections, and see how many points you need to make up. Then you can make up a simple chart like this and assess each competitive team’s potential points in the categories. Set each team’s highest possible and lowest possible score in each category, and be realistic: Proj 3RD 4TH 5TH YOU =================================== BA 9- 9 10-10 7- 8 11-12 HR 11-12 6- 7 8-11 2- 5 RBI 9-12 7- 8 9-12 2- 3 SB 11-12 8-10 6- 7 11-12 W 3- 5 6- 8 3- 5 6- 8 SV 4- 4 9-12 5- 6 1- 2 ERA 4- 7 4- 6 8-11 7-10 WHIP 6- 9 8-10 5- 8 7- 9 =================================== TOTAL 57-70 58-71 51-68 47-61 For a reality check, each team’s projected final score should be between in your estimates. Looking at the example, you are in sixth. But the only way to get into third spot will be for you to max out and for all the teams ahead of you to fall towards the lower ends of your estimates, almost across the board. As a refinement, you should circle every high and low score across the board the coincides with where the actual projection is, to see if the projections are already at the high end (with room to fall) or at the low end (with room to grow). At this point, you have to accept that your chances are pretty slim—especially since there will often be some categories in which your competitors are close enough to each other that they can’t both hit their minimums, because they would have to pass the other team on the way down, boosting that team back upwards. And of course, the same is even more true as the number of teams between you and the money increases. If you have done your estimating scrupulously, then there should be about a 50-50 chance that any particular team will fall in a category. When you mulitpy out that probability over eight categories, there’s just a 0.4% likelihood that a team will fall in all the categories. So you’re a longshot. And when you throw in more teams between you and your goal, your shot doesn’t get any shorter. Not only is probability against you, but as above, they can’t all go down without passing each other along the way—and negating some of the impacts you need. IS IT WORTH IT? If you think you have a shot at a money position, you still have to ask yourself if the risk is worth the potential reward. You face two related risks if you decide to run for the roses by acquiring in dump trades: First, you forego the benefits of your young up-and-comers in coming seasons. Since these young undervalue players are the key to success, this is not a consideration to take lightly. Second, you have an opportunity cost in foregoing the other young stars you would have acquired by dumping your own big-buck studs. Those are the risks. The rewards include money payouts, which vary from league to league (there’s a poster in our HQ Forums where the payouts are in the thousands of dollars). You also risk losing potentially valuable draft positions, if you are in one of the many leagues who wisely reward teams that keep pressing by awarding the top minor-league draft position to the first team under the money. And you risk the bragging rights and league “cred” that come from hustling to the end. Anybody can dump. Not anyone can whip a sixth-place horse into fourth spot. There’s some satisfaction in that. TIMING In our example, it seems like the right play is to dump out and build for 2006. That leaves the question of timing. Be very wary of Roto advice columns that insist there’s a “best” time to dump. There is no hard-and-fast rule because the decision takes place in a dynamic environment where circumstances change all the time. That said, there are some things you can take into account while planning to make your move: Being first to dump creates an advantage in that you could land the most prized prospects and budget keepers. It also allows you to “set the market” to some extent. But you can also lose leverage by being first to go—setting a market that allows others to get better returns from their dumps because your move set a floor. Waiting, which many experts advise against, can be a smart move as well, since the first dump deal puts a lot of pressure on the other front-runners to deal, which could allow you to drive a harder bargain. As well, it’s a very sound tactic to split up your impact studs in hopes of making multiple deals. Be sure to make offers to all the contenders, which will help you get you top returns while lessening the inevitable grouching from teams that didn’t get your guys. CONCLUSION If you have a shot at the money—especially at the top spot—you are honor-bound to go for it, even though it could cost you if your bid falls short after the trade deadline. The most important thing is to be realistic about your expectations, and honest to the point of pessimism in projecting your results and those of your competitors. The aphorism about “winners never quit” can be made 100% accurate if you just add the words “thinking and planning.” At 2:34 on 7/2/2005, Chicago Tube Sox wrote: Bah! If he wants to do this type of stuff, go to the Yankees or someplace. We don’t want that kind of player here.” Lee said he identifies with the travails Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees has experienced over the past two seasons, as he has struggled to gain the vague status of “true Yankee.” “Just like Alex, I’m just going to keep my head down and play hard,” said Lee. “I can’t help what people think about me. And who knows, maybe one day it won’t seem like selling out for a Brewers player to actually be good.” Brewers manager Ned Yost feels the Milwaukee fans and media will eventually come around to Lee. “As well as Carlos is playing, it’s not like he’s single-handedly winning games for us – we still stink,” said Yost. “So I think that people will eventually realize that and come over to his side. At 8:54 on 5/11/2005, RN`s Medicine Men wrote: TORONTO — Tony Peña resigned Tuesday night as the Royals' manager less than two seasons after his selection as the American League Manager of the Year. Bench coach Bob Schaefer will direct the club on an interim basis beginning this afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays, but general manager Allard Baird said a search already was under way to find a permanent replacement. (IN WHICH THE CHEAP-ASS, DAVID GLASS WILL POCKET THE MONEY. THIS MAY TAKE A LONG TIME.) (ALSO, ENLONGATES THE SMOKESCREEN IN TACT THAT BAIRD IS A SUB-PAR GM) Peña's decision came after a 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays left the Royals with baseball's worst record at 8-25. It caught Baird and other club officials by surprise(RIGHT!), but Peña said he had been thinking about resigning for a while. “I can't take it anymore,” he said. “We are not playing well. It's tough to go to the ballpark and lose game after game. I haven't been eating. I haven't been sleeping. I don't want to get sick.” (MIGHT HELP IF GLASS SPENT SOME FRIGGIN' CASH!) Peña said his decision was not connected to off-field personal matters. Peña acknowledged earlier this week that he has been subpoenaed as a witness in a civil court case, but he declined to provide further details. (ALL HUSH, HUSH AT THIS POINT....BUT ULTIMATELY THIS WILL BE THE "SPIN" PUT ON THE RESIGNATON BY BAIRD/GLASS) Baird said Peña, 47, will remain in the organization in an as-yet unspecified capacity. “He's a guy who has a tremendous passion for this organization,” Baird said. “He's still talking about the direction of the ball club, That says a lot about who he is and what he is.” Peña informed Baird of his intention to resign when the two met Tuesday after the Royals lost for the 19th time in their last 23 games. The decision prompted a flurry of activity at the team's hotel, including a late-night meeting with the coaching staff. Club owner David Glass learned of Peña's resignation when contacted by The Kansas City Star.(HMMM...SO BAIRD DIDN'T CONTACT GLASS BEFORE THE NEWSPAPER COULD? TRY THAT ONE WITH YOUR BOSS. TRY THAT ONE WITH GEORGE STEINBRENER. WHAT DOES THIS ASY ABOUT DAVID GLASS???) “All of us are really disappointed in the way it's gone so far this year,” Glass said. “I know Tony's as disappointed as any of us. I think he has a love for baseball I admire very much and an enthusiasm I really admire. He brought a lot to the Royals.”(AND YOU HAVEN'T GLASS, YOU CHEAP ASS.) The Royals were 198-285 under Peña, who became the club's 16th manager on May 15, 2002. Schaefer, 60, is in his fourth season as the club's bench coach. He previously worked for the Royals from 1988-92 in various capacities and managed one game in 1991 as the interim replacement between the firing of John Wathan and the hiring of Hal McRae. Baird gave no timetable for choosing a permanent replacement. “The search has already begun in my mind,” he said. “But the next guy has to be a fit with what we're doing. He has to buy into our plan of building a team around our young players.”(FORMER PHILLY MGR, WHAT'S THE GUY'S NAME???) Baird declined to identify possible candidates, but Frank White, a longtime favorite among Royals fans, is likely to be considered.(I'M SURE HE WOULD BE CHEAP!) White interviewed for the post when the club hired Peña. White later chose to return to managing in the minor leagues at Class AA Wichita in order to bolster his future chances. George Brett, the club's only Hall of Fame member, said Tuesday he would listen if contacted about the manager's job but suggested that if he were offered the post he would decline. (BRETT WAS PART OF ANY OWNERSHIP GROUP THAT BID ON THE ROYALS DURING THE KAUFFMAN SALE...AND YOU THINK IS GOING TO BA A MANAGER!!!?) Neither White nor Brett has managed in the major leagues, but neither had Peña before his hiring. Peña was the bench coach for the Houston Astros when Baird selected him from a group of four finalists that included Buck Showalter, Bucky Dent and John Mizerock. The Royals were 49-77 in 2002 after Peña became the permanent replacement for Tony Muser, but the team enjoyed unexpected success the following year, finishing with its first winning season since 1994.(SINCE 1994!!! I'M JUST GETTING SICK NOW.) Much of the credit went to Peña for his relentless optimism and “We Believe” mantra(SHOULD OF GOTTEN THE T-SHIRT) as the Royals opened the 2003 season with nine straight victories and raced to a 16-3 record. They held first place in the American League Central Division for much of the season before fading to third and finishing 83-79. The club's success resulted in Peña's landslide selection as AL Manager of the Year, but the Royals failed to build on that breakthrough in 2004 despite the acquisition of several veteran free-agent players.(JUAN GONE, BENITO...NOTE THE DIDN'T SAY HIGH QUALITY) Instead, the club tumbled to the worst record in franchise history at 58-104. Injuries contributed to a poor start,(DL'D FOR INSURANCE REIMBURESEMNT: SEE ABOVE PLAYERS) which prompted the decision to re-emphasize its youth movement — most notably by trading star outfielder Carlos Beltran for three prospects. (JOHN BUCK, TEHAN, AND A SCHMUCK) “What we're doing is the right thing for this organization,” Peña said Tuesday night. “I believe the Kansas City Royals will build a (playoff) contender for years to come if they stick with this plan.(FAT CHANCE. WHEN BAIRD... SINKS MONEY INTO A 5 YEAR DEAL WITH RUBEN GOTAY, YES RUBEN GOTAY; THINKS GREINKE IS A #1 STARTER; I COULD GO ON.) “But it is also right for me to step away. I have too much respect for this game, too much passion, for things to keep going the way they are going. The losing, I just take it so hard.” ("GET ME THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!")
